In een afgelegen dorpje is de jonge Ruth vastbesloten haar thuis te verlaten wanneer ze op een hogeschool toegelaten wordt. Om de studies te kunnen bekostigen voegt ze zich met haar broer bij een bende die metaalafval bijeen sprokkelt. Ruth heeft gedurende deze baan maar een doel voor ogen, maar realiseert zich dat haar veelbelovende toekomst haar weleens haar familie kan kosten.
