Larry Cook is de gemeenschapsleider. Alle boeren die advies nodig hebben voor een beslissing komen eerst bij Larry. Als Larry zijn einde voelt naderen, besluit hij zijn land te verdelen onder zijn drie dochters. Dat stuit onmiddellijk op weerstanden: zijn jongste dochter en oogappel weigert het aanbod, vermoedelijk omdat ze als juriste weet hoe verkeerd het met dit soort constructies kan aflopen. Het land wordt vervolgens onder de twee andere dochters verdeeld, maar de ellende is onstuitbaar. Spanningen lopen op, relaties lopen stuk, pijnlijke herinneringen lopen uit de hand. Het komt tot een bittere rechtszaak en veel tragiek.
