Plot

In een klein stadje in de buurt van Parijs ontmoet François Jaubert, een student, tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog een vrouw genaamd Marthe Grangier. Ze is een verpleegster, ouder dan hij, en verloofd met een soldaat die aan het front vecht. François wordt op slag verliefd. Maar de moeder van de jongeman probeert haar zoon weg te houden van deze reeds beloofde vrouw. Marthe trouwt daarom met haar soldaat. Enige tijd na haar huwelijk, in de euforie van de wapenstilstand, ontmoet de verpleegster per ongeluk François en wordt zijn minnares. De twee geliefden geven zich over aan hun hartstochtelijke affaire, zonder zich zorgen te maken over de gevolgen van hun houding...
