In de Atlantische Oceaan zijn wetenschappers bezig met onderzoek in het Ocean Lab II. Alles gaat goed totdat het lab wordt getroffen door een zeebeving en naar onbekende diepten meegesleurd wordt. De zoektocht van een eerste onderzeeër levert niets op en de mini-onderzeeër Neptunus wordt op pad gestuurd. Als de aquanauten een enorm gat op de bodem van de zee ontdekken begint een ware odyssee vol gevaren.
