Zuid-Afrika, 1990. Er staan twee belangrijke zaken te gebeuren: Nelson Mandela wordt vrijgelaten en, belangrijker, het is het eerste jaar van Spud Milton in een elitaire jongensschool. John Milton komt uit een modaal gezin en wint een beurs om te gaan studeren aan een privéschool in Kwazulu-Natal, Zuid-Afrika. Omgeven door jongens die luisteren naar bijnamen als Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man en Mad Dog, heeft Spud de handen vol om zich aan te passen aan z'n nieuwe thuis. Ondertussen neemt Spud ook z'n eerste stappen op de weg naar de mannelijkheid, een weg die wel eens lang zou kunnen zijn.
Nee, helaas is Spud nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
