Het loopt tegen het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De Duitsers hebben het grootste deel van Frankrijk verloren en de geallieerde troepen besluiten hen de beslissende slag toe te dienen. Het plan is duizenden soldaten te droppen achter de linies in Nederland en daar een paar sleutelposten vast te houden, tot er versterking aankomt. De belangrijkste post is de brug bij Arnhem; wanneer deze is veroverd, ligt de route naar het westen van Duitsland open.
