De danseres Kamala zou uitgehuwelijkt worden mocht ze niet gevlucht zijn. Nu woont ze bij haar vader en jongere zus. Ze ontmoet de moslim Samil, wiens ouders geëxecuteerd zijn, en gaat met hem een relatie aan. Hoewel hun relatie centraal staat worden ook andere personages gevolgd zoals een meisje dat vriendschap sluit met een dove weesjongen, de politie die raids uitvoert en een lerares Engels.
