Hank Marshall (Tommy Lee Jones), een hardwerkende en goedaardige wetenschapper in dienst van het leger, heeft zijn handen vol aan explosieve atoomreactoren en zijn, niet minder explosieve, vrouw Carly (Jessica Lange). Terwijl hij druk bezig is met het begeleiden van tests in Nevada, zwicht zij voor de avances van zijn superieur. Maar het overspel van zijn vrouw is niet het enige dilemma waar Marshall mee te kampen krijgt...
