Susan Lansing is het prototype van een 'sterke vrouw'. Als alleenstaande moeder heeft ze de zorg over een vlotte maar soms dwarse zestienjarige zoon. Daarnaast heeft ze een baan als hoofdverpleegster op de kinderafdeling van het plaatselijke ziekenhuis. Misschien is ze in beide rollen een beetje te zorgelijk, maar ze heeft het hart op de goeie plek en ze wordt alom gewaardeerd. Niet in de laatste plaats omdat ze bereid is om een baby die met aids is besmet te adopteren.
