Alfie Byrne is een bus conducteur van middelbare leeftijd in Dublin in 1963. Hij lijkt een leven van stille wanhoop te leiden: hij is homo, maar stevig in de kast, en zijn zus probeert altijd 'het juiste meisje' voor hem te vinden. Zijn passie is Oscar Wilde, zijn hobby is het opvoeren van amateurtheaterproducties in de plaatselijke kerkzaal. We volgen hem terwijl hij worstelt met verleiding, vriendschap, afkeuring en de conservatieve maar vreemd lyrische wereld van Ierland in de vroege jaren 1960.
