De uitgever Martin Jamison wil een afspraak maken met Philo Vance, omdat hij hem als deskundige wil gebruiken voor misdaadverhalen, die hij wil publiceren. Jamison vraagt aan zijn secretaresse Mona Bannister Vance 's avonds naar zijn huis te brengen. Jamison wil die avond ook de moord op zijn zakenpartner Sam Philips, die zeven jaar geleden op zijn redactie heeft plaats gevonden, met Vance bespreken. Elizabeth, Sam Philips ex-vrouw, nu receptioniste bij Jamison's uitgeverij, is verontrust, wanneer ze over de afspraak van Jamison met Vance hoort. Wanneer Mona en Vance de oprijlaan van Jamison's huis oprijden, horen ze twee schoten. Jamison's lijk wordt nog die avond in de kofferbank van Vance's auto gevonden.
