Charlie lijdt aan kataplexie. Bij het ervaren van sterke emoties, in zijn geval voornamelijk vreugde, krijgt hij aanvallen die zijn spieren doen verlammen. Als oplossing hiervoor ontwikkelt hij een reeks technieken om te voorkomen dat hij te veel geluk en plezier voelt. Geen sinecure en al zeker niet wanneer hij verliefd wordt op Francesca.
