Robert, een jonge Franse militair, vervoegt zich bij zijn broer Henri in Hanoi (Indochina) in 1945. Tijdens een aanval van de Japanners ziet Robert hoe Henri en zijn zwangere vrouw geëxecuteerd worden. Robert wil zich wreken en sluit zich aan bij het Franse leger. Maar wanneer hij Mai, een lokale prostituee, ontmoet worden zijn overtuigingen en zijn haatgevoelens flink door elkaar geschud.
