In een lang vergeten dorpje in Louisiana is de agent Harry in een neerwaartse spiraal terechtgekomen sinds de dood van zijn vrouw. Hij geeft een dollarbriefje aan zijn neef voor een onschuldige aankoop, een actie die het verhaal op gang brengt. We volgen diverse personen die allen kampen met financiële problemen en slechts één zekerheid kennen: ze zijn de wanhoop nabij.
