Willowdean, bijgenaamd Dumplin, is de plus-size tienerdochter van een voormalig schoonheidskoningin. Ze stelt zich kandidaat voor haar optocht genaamd 'Miss Teen Bluebonnet', dit als protest. Deze ingeving van haar escaleert wanneer andere deelnemers in haar voetstappen treden waardoor de stoet in het kleine dorpje in Texas op een revolutie uitdraait.
