Het is 1992 en Litouwen is overgestapt van het communisme naar het kapitalisme, waardoor het kleine collectieve varkensbedrijf, beheerd door Irena, in nood verkeert. Irena worstelt om de boerderij en haar werknemers in leven te houden wanneer een knappe Amerikaan, Bernardas, belooft om de in moeilijkheden verkerende onderneming te redden en Irena's gezinsleven en de routine van het dorp op zijn kop zet. Wanneer Irena begint te vallen voor zijn charmes, realiseert ze zich dat zijn bedoelingen misschien niet helemaal onschuldig zijn.
