Het zoontje Peter (Corbin Allred) van Maggie (Ann-Margret) is bij een ongeluk zijn gehoor kwijtgeraakt, wat zijn moeder een hopeloos schuldgevoel heeft opgeleverd. Dat heeft een negatieve impact op haar huwelijk, dat er niet veel beter op wordt als Maggie op de nieuwe buurman Owen (Kris Kristofferson) verliefd wordt.
