Richard is een hoogleraar die het leven niet meer ziet zitten, nadat hij gediagnosticeerd wordt met iets dat zijn leven totaal ondersteboven zet. Hij besluit alles opzij te schuiven en zijn bestaan zo brutaal en onbezorgd door te brengen. Met een apart gevoel voor humor en een roekeloze manier van doen en laten, pakt hij alles aan wat hij eerder niet deed, waaronder drinken, roken, seks en het klakkeloos uitschelden van voorbijgangers die hem irriteren. Het zal hem meer plezier geven dan hij in jaren had.
