Schrijver Nate zit in een crisis en krijgt geen woord meer op papier. Hij is gedwongen in te trekken bij zijn vader die woont in een bejaardentehuis. Zijn jolige vader Bob gelooft dat humor het tegengif is voor de problemen in het leven. Zijn nonchalante houding heeft echter effect op de emotionele betrokkenheid bij zijn zoon.
