De weesjongen Seiya gaat op zoek naar zijn ontvoerde zus en ontdekt dat hij over verborgen krachten beschikt. Hij wordt door Alman Kido benaderd om met enkele anderen de Ridders van de Zodiac te vormen. Samen dienen ze de godin Athena en de aarde te beschermen. Een geheime organisatie onder leiding van Guraad heeft het gemunt op Athena's krachten.
