Op een afgelegen eiland woont Lionel met zijn kleindochter Liv, die in stilte haar bestaan leidt. Ze verslindt filosofie en literatuur en is een bewonderaarster van de werken van Shakespeare. De stervende Lionel denkt intussen aan haar toekomst en schakelt de hulp in van neuroloog Michael om haar te helpen.
