Brady Hawkes, The Gambler, ontvangt een brief van zijn zoon waarin deze om hulp vraagt. Brady trekt erop uit en ontmoet onderweg Billy Montana, een bijdehante, jonge gokker, die denkt alles te weten over kaarten. Ze besluiten samen op pad te gaan en onderweg leert Brady Billy nog van alles over het leven als gokker.
