De film gaat over de 18-jarige Max (Penot) die begin 20ste eeuw stopt met zijn studie en aanmonstert bij de marine als matroos 512. Op een goede dag wordt hij uitgenodigd bij de familie van de commandant waar hij wordt bediend door de lieflijke Colette (Laure Duthilleul) én tegelijkertijd wordt verleid door de vrouw (Dominique Sanda) van de commandant (Bruno Cremer). De verhouding maakt hem hoofdverdachte van een moord. Hij wordt opgesloten in een pantserschip maar weet te ontkomen.
