De film speelt zich af in een klein stadje in het oosten van Engeland in 1959. Florence Green besluit, ondanks beleefd maar meedogenloos lokaal verzet, een boekwinkel te openen. Door de lokale bevolking bloot te stellen aan messcherpe literatuur, zoals Nabokovs Lolita en Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, plukt ze de vruchten van een conservatief stadje dat ontwaakt.
