Zomer 1935. De 13-jarige Briony Tallis, afkomstig uit een welgestelde familie, is een beginnend toneelschrijfster. Ze wil dat haar nichtje Lola en de tweeling Jackson en Pierrot een toneelstuk opvoeren dat ze zelf heeft geschreven, maar het resultaat stelt weinig voor. Diezelfde dag ziet ze hoe Robbie, de zoon van de bediende, haar zus Cecilia laat uitkleden. Wanneer Briony later een schunnige brief van Robbie aan Cecilia onderschept, trekt ze haar eigen, verregaande conclusies.
