Arthur Chipping (Peter O'Toole) is een jonge meester die alles volgens de boeken doet, in een Britse jongensschool in de jaren '20. Hij wordt verliefd op een zangeres Katherine Bridges (Petula Clark), die in de oorlogsjaren sterft. Arthur overleeft de klap door zichzelf te toe te wijden aan zijn jonge leerlingen. Een musical-remake van de versie uit 1939.
