De alleenstaande moeder Dottie Ingels verkoopt schoonheidsproducten in een groot warenhuis, maar droomt van een carrière als komedienne. Als ze een kleine erfenis krijgt, besluit ze om haar geluk te wagen en verhuist met haar twee dochters naar New York. Al na een paar kleine optredens wordt ze opgemerkt door de talentenjager Arnold Moss. Maar naarmate Dottie populairder wordt, voelen haar twee dochters zich steeds meer alleen gelaten.
