Plot

Tenor- en sopraansaxofonist John Coltrane (1926-1967) is een legende, een begeesterend muzikant die met zijn onderzoekende en intense solo’s de jazz vernieuwde. In Chasing Trane vertellen onder anderen Sonny Rollins, Bill Clinton en de huidige stersaxofonist Kamasi Washington wat Coltrane zo bijzonder maakt, als muzikant en als mens. De documentaire, met bijdragen van Coltrane-biograaf Lewis Porter en criticus Ashley Kahn, volgt in grote lijnen zijn loopbaan, van beginneling in de bigband van Dizzy Gillespie (1949-1951) en de twee periodes bij trompettist Miles Davis (hij speelde in 1959 op de klassieke jazzplaat Kind of Blue) tot het oprichten van zijn eigen fameuze kwartet in 1961.
