1936. David, een jonge werkloze Brit, trekt naar Spanje om er aan de zijde van de internationale brigades te vechten tegen de fascisten die de jonge Spaanse republiek bedreigen. Samen met de Fransman Bernard, de Amerikaan Lawrence en de voormalige IRA-strijder Coogan komt hij terecht bij de revolutionaire POUM-militie, geleid door Capitan Vidal.
