De 4-jaar oude Ponette rijdt met haar moeder in de auto, wanneer ze een ongeluk krijgen en haar moeder overlijdt. Haar gefrustreerde vader en tante trachten haar te troosten door te vertellen over Jezus en de hemel, maar Ponette begrijpt niets van de realiteit van haar moeders dood. Zij zal haar verwarring zelf moeten zien op te lossen.
