John Bartle is een soldaat die uitgezonden wordt naar Irak. Hij probeert twee taken te vervullen. Een is zijn land dienen en de andere is zich aan een belofte houden: Hij heeft namelijk gezworen aan de moeder van een collega-soldaat om haar zoon Murphy te beschermen.
