"Waarom moet alles altijd over slavernij en armoede gaan", verzucht schrijver Jean Jones, de neurotische, zelfgenoegzame maar immer charmante telg van een Jamaicaans-Amerikaanse familie uit de New Yorkse middenklasse. Worstelend met de verwachtingen voor haar nieuwste boek, dat al is aangekondigd als 'the next quintessential black experience', is ze met haar leven op een dood spoor geraakt. Haar vriend heeft haar bovendien koeltjes medegedeeld dat hij tijd en ruimte nodig heeft, waardoor ze plotseling dakloos is. Een diner met haar eeuwig bekvechtende moeder, tantes en oma loopt vervolgens uit op een tragedie door de onverwachte verschijning van Jeans opa, die nog voordat hij zijn komst heeft kunnen verklaren in de deuropening overlijdt.
