Accidents Happen is een bittere - coming of age - komedie over de Conways, een doorsnee familie in een Amerikaanse buitenwijk. Aan het hoofd staat moeder Gloria (Geena Davis) liefhebbend, ad rem en af en toe enigszins cynisch. Haar jongste zoon Billy lijkt het noodlot aan te trekken en veroorzaakt ongelukken aan de lopende band. Wanneer één van die tragische ongevallen de hele familie treft, moet iedereen alle zeilen bijzetten om overeind te blijven. Als Billy daarna met zijn buurjongen kattenkwaad uithaalt, slaat het noodlot nogmaals toe.
