De film gaat over Gilbert Wooley (Lewis) een goochelaar op z'n retour die naar Japan afreist om de overzeese troepen te vermaken. Hij verliest zich gaandeweg in romantiek en sentiment ten koste van respectievelijk een Japanse weduwe en haar goedlachse neefje.
