Bickford Shmeckler (Patrick Fugit) studeert aan de universiteit en heeft thuis familieproblemen. Om die te verwerken verzint hij allemaal ideeën die hij verwerkt in een boek. Sarah (Olivia Wilde) vindt het boek en begint het te lezen. Zij is zo onder de indruk van Bickford's boek, dat ze het steelt, waardoor zijn ideeën een legende worden.
