Claude (Thornton) is een eenvoudige gemeenteambtenaar (hij maait de grasvelden van gemeentelijke gebouwen en parken) in een kleine plaats in Arkansas. Hij is getrouwd met southern belle Ruby (Laura Dern). Als hij hoort dat zijn oom Hazel van moord wordt beschuldigd, besluiten Claude en Ruby hun steun te betuigen. In hun kielzog reizen mee Ruby's moeder Jewel (Diane Ladd) en zus Rose (Kelly Preston). Zogenaamd om Ruby's schoonfamilie bij te staan, maar als snel blijken de twee een geheime agenda te hebben: met instemming van haar moeder probeert Rose Claude, met wie ze voordat deze met Ruby trouwde iets had, terug te winnen.
