Medina verhuist met haar familie naar het 'paradijs' in Palos Verdes, Californië, waar ze een schijnbaar nieuw en gelukkig leven beginnen. Wanneer het huwelijk tussen Medina’s ouders toch niet lijkt stand te houden, komt haar moeder terecht in een emotionele spiraal en zoekt Medina's tweelingbroer Jim zijn heil in drugs. Medina zit helemaal in het midden van dit alles en moet fungeren als de stabiele kracht binnen het gezin. Zij vindt haar toevlucht in het surfen.
