Onderwijzer Ben du Toit (Donald Sutherland) heeft eigenlijk maar weinig kennis van het apartheids-regime in Zuid-Afrika, waaronder hij leeft. Wanneer de zoon van zijn zwarte tuinman onder vreemde omstandigheden om het leven komt, ziet hij in wat voor een vreselijke daden er door justitie uitgericht worden. Vastbesloten om zijn tuinman te helpen schakelt Ben advocaat Ian Mackenzie (Marlon Brando) in om de moordenaar aan te klagen.
