De hoogbegaafde Carrie Pilby is al op 19-jarige leeftijd afgestudeerd aan de Harvard universiteit. Na haar afstuderen heeft geen idee hoe ze erbij moet horen, daten of überhaupt met mensen moet communiceren. Ze is ervan overtuigd dat het merendeel van de inwoners uit haar woonplaats New York geobsedeerd door seks, immoreel en hypocriet is en daar wil ze niets mee te maken hebben. Hierdoor leidt ze een geïsoleerd bestaan. Haar therapeut geeft haar een lijstje met opdrachten dat haar dwingt af te stappen van haar vooroordelen en toe te werken naar een socialer leven. Maar hoe ver is Carrie bereid te gaan om erbij te horen?
