De geëmancipeerde Duits-Turkse Lale Demirkan is opgegroeid met zowel de Duitse als Turkse cultuur. Op de universiteit studeert ze germanistiek, maar thuis is ze als moslima een voorbeeld als dochter. Haar vader Cengiz is sympathiek, maar tegelijkertijd ook zeer traditioneel. Lale raakt echter verstrikt tussen traditie en de moderne gewoontes, waardoor ze in een gewetensconflict terechtkomt. Zo handelt haar vader in het naar Duitsland brengen van Turkse ‘importbruiden’ voor Turkse mannen. Lala wil de vrouwen helpen om de Duitse 300-woordentest te leren. Dit is namelijk de enige manier waarop ze een verblijfsvergunning kunnen bemachtigen.
