Het verhaal gaat over de agressieve, gewelddadige bokser Billy Hope die zich naar de top weet te werken. Wanneer de weltergewicht-bokskampioen door zijn gedrag een gevecht uitlokt, met de dood van zijn vrouw als gevolg, valt zijn persoonlijke leven echter aan diggelen.
