De film speelt zich af in het begin van 2000 en richt zich op de beproevingen van een Amerikaanse tv-ster van in de twintig en zijn correspondentie met Rupert Turner, een 11-jarige, opkomende acteur die bij zijn moeder in Engeland woont. Hun levens krijgen een dramatische wending wanneer het bestaan van hun correspondentievriendschap publiekelijk wordt gemaakt. Hierdoor worden de meest ongegronde veronderstellingen uitgelokt, wat Donovan in een neerwaartse spiraal brengt.
