De twintigjarige Alice woont in Bayeux. Ze werkt met wol, creëert kleurstoffen en maakt kledingstukken. Ze weet haar aangeboren talent hiervoor te benutten totdat ze Agnès ontmoet, een rijke vrouw uit Parijs die haar introduceert bij een prestigieuze school voor toegepaste kunst. Alice laat alles achter en gaat in Parijs wonen. Daar ontmoet ze Antoine, de zoon van Agnès.
