Hamlet, Prins van Denemarken, keert terug naar zijn vaderland als zijn vader, de koning, sterft. Hamlet's moeder, Gertrude, is al hertrouwd met zijn oom Claudius, de nieuwe koning. Ze dringen bij Hamlet aan om te trouwen met zijn geliefde Ophelia. Dan verschijnt de geest van zijn vader die Hamlet vertelt dat hij door Claudius en Gertrude is vermoord. Hamlet zint op wraak.
