De Thompsons zijn een doorsnee gezin zonder noemenswaardige problemen. Na een banaal verkeersongeval blijkt zoon Steve aan een ernstige vorm van geheugenverlies te lijden. Steve raakt meer en meer vervreemd, ondanks alle inspanningen van de familieleden om hem terug binnen het gezin te integreren.
