Nadat ze alles in een tsunami is verloren, wordt het kleine meisje Hana in huis genomen door een ver familielid, de 26-jarige Jungo Kusarino. Jungo werkt als kok voor de kustwacht in het winterse Hokkaido, en laat Hana in haar pubertijd soms enkele dagen alleen. Wanneer een oudere man Hana, voor haar eigen bestwil, probeert te scheiden van Jungo, wakkert hij haar emotionele woede aan.
