Passion concentreert zich op Grainger's ongewone relatie met zijn moeder en zijn seksuele eigenaardigheden (vooral zijn obsessieve zelfkastijding, hoewel homoseksualiteit ook wordt gesuggereerd) die zijn relatie met een vrouw die van hem gaat houden beïnvloeden. Het speelt zich voornamelijk af in Londen in 1914, toen Grainger's moeder Rose ziek was (ze zou later haar dood tegemoet springen in New York, overstuur door ongegronde geruchten over incest met haar zoon).
