De kleine Pat Warren wordt wees wanneer haar vader, een plantage-eigenaar uit Georgia, onder de voet wordt gelopen door een angstig paard. Pat en haar hond Banjo verhuizen naar Boston waar een tante woont. Van haar tante mag de hond niet binnen komen en ze stuurt de hond terug naar het zuiden. Pat loopt weg van haar nieuwe huis om Banjo terug te vinden.
