Gitaarspelende autodief Wesley Benfield, die werd gearresteerd wegens schending van zijn voorwaardelijke vrijlating, wordt veroordeeld tot een leven in een voorrangshuis midden in de bijbel gordel. Ned Sears, die het huis runt, is een excentrieke oproerkraaier die jonge criminelen rekruteert op basis van hun muzikale talent. Dan ontmoet Wesley Vernon, een autistisch begaafde pianist wiens bluesliedjes hen allemaal inspireren. Vernon is voor hen de vonk om de band Killer Diller Blues Band te vormen.
