Nick Robey is een corrupte, maar toch wel sympathieke crimineel. Nick leidt een triest leven met zijn alcoholische moeder. Zijn vriend Al Molin weet hem over te halen deel te nemen aan een overval, maar die loopt uit de hand. Een politieman wordt levensgevaarlijk gewond en Nick kan ternauwernood vluchten. Hij probeert de verdenking op hem te voorkomen door zich te verschansen bij een lokaal binnenzwembad. Nick duikt in het zwembad en hij ontmoet vervolgens de zachtaardige en respectabele Peggy Dobbs. Nick geeft Peggy zwemles en zij introduceert hem bij haar ouders, haar jongere broer Tommy en haar vriendin Marge. De politie weet Nick te traceren en hij voelt zich gedwongen de familie Dobbs te gijzelen.
